DOAG Database 2024

Sven Illert -

Recently me and some of my colleages from Robotron visited the DOAG Database conference in Düsseldorf. I also spoke about Transparent Data Encryption and it’s little helpers on Oracle Engineered Systems. You may already have read about some of these in my blog in the past. I was happy that although during my speech nobody asked a question - which is kind of irritating since you can’t know if that’s out of misinterest or because you answered already everything - that afterwards some people told me it was a quite good and useful speech. Feedback is always welcome and I appreciate that!

There were a lot interesting presentations by others and as always it’s not possible to attend every of them because some were held in parallel. The most intersting informations for me came from Oracle product management this year. The first one was the announcement and details about the Exascale feature for Exadata deployments and the according cloud service. I’m really looking forward how that will improve performance of smaller database configurations in the OCI where the base database service may not serve all storage performance needs. Also being able to use snapshot features more easily is quite a good thing to look forward to.

The other interesting information gained was about the general purpose cluster in Oracle Grid Infrastructure 23ai. With that it seems to be possible to replace the Oracle Restart feature with a more sophisticated solution where you can use ACFS in a much more convenient manner. It would also be a perfect solution for systems that need a striped cluster filesystem on a JBOD storage system. That would be very handy for virtualized environments on old HA-ODAs that are out of support. Now I’m looking forward to my first visit of CloudLand 2024 in June.

PS: I finally fixed the comments on my blog. Feel free to drop me a note ;-).
